For younger children with ASD or speech delay, treatment may focus on improving speech and language skills, which starts from the prerequisite skills of communication, such as joint attention and eye contact. Just as how a child must first learn to stand before learning to walk, speech therapy will focus on these prerequisite skills to build up foundations for communication.
